The administrative center of King County and a major seaport, Seattle is part of the state of Washington United States of America. When you evaluate geographically where Seattle is located, you can envy the diverse natural landscape. The city sits on seven hills: Denny, Magnolia, Beacon, West Seattle, Queen Anne, First Hill, and Capitol Hill. Earthquakes are common in the area due to the proximity of the Cascade Mountains near Lakes Sammamish and Washington.
As for water elements, besides the mentioned lakes, citizens and guests have an opportunity to swim in one of the Puget Sound bays, as well as on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. By the way, the population of Seattle is more than 612 thousand people.
It is believed that Seattle was founded in 1851 on November 13, when the first European settlement was laid out on its territory. Its organizer, Arthur Denny, called it New York Alki — "Future New York." Since 1853, however, the township has been called Seattle. It got its name from the names of the chiefs of the local Duwamish and Suquamish tribes.
But that is not the city’s only name. Over the years, it has had several unofficial titles. In 1869, Seattle was often referred to as the “Queen City” — a shortened version of the title “The Pacific Queen City,” which was informally used by U.S. real estate agencies. In 1982, a contest was held to choose the best unofficial name for the city.
Since then, it has been known as the “Emerald City.” Seattle is also often called “Jet City,” as it is home to the Boeing Company. Due to its frequent rainfall and persistent drizzle, it is also known as the “City of Rain.” Another nickname is the “Gateway to Alaska,” since cruises to that region of the country regularly depart from its port.
In addition to Boeing, the city is famous for its coffee culture. The nationwide coffee craze began here. Seattle is the birthplace of Starbucks and many other well-known coffee chains. It is also home to corporations such as Microsoft and Amazon. Furthermore, the city is known as the birthplace of the “grunge” music style. Here lived, created, used heroin, and took his own life Kurt Cobain — the vocalist and leader of the iconic band Nirvana. In Viretta Park stands a memorial bench — a place of tribute to his memory.
