In the official administrative division of Vietnam there are 59 provinces covering a small area of the country in a mosaic. But traditionally, more extensive regions of Vietnam are distinguished based on traditional, climatic and tourist features.

Northern region of Vietnam

This part of the country is more commonly referred to simply as North Vietnam. Most of the area is mountainous, so the climate is less hot than the rest of Vietnam. The region borders China in the north, Laos to the west and the Tokyo Bay of the South China Sea on the east coast. The southernmost province of North Vietnam is Ninh Binh Province.
