Public transportation in Kaprun includes buses and cabs. At the end of November, when the ski season starts, a ski bus runs from Kaprun to the ski elevators on the Kitzsteinhorn. It is free of charge if you have a ski pass. There is also a free ski bus to neighboring Zell am See.
Before 2000, the resort operated a cable car that took skiers from the town right up to the Kitzsteinhorn mountain. It was one of the resort's attractions, as much of its route ran in a mountain tunnel. But it was shut down after one of the cars caught fire right in the tunnel.
The most convenient way to get to the elevators is by rental car, which you can rent from the town's central tourist office.
