Basic information about Paraty

The location of Paraty is halfway between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, making it one of the most picturesque towns in Brazil. The population of Paraty is often referred to as the Brazilian bohemia, a title well-deserved. For decades, artists and creative minds have been drawn to this city for relaxation and inspiration.

Paraty holds the prestigious status of a UNESCO International Treasure, recognized not only by Brazil but by the world. Founded in 1667, it served as a significant outpost during the country's colonization. This small town is essentially an open-air museum, preserving buildings and entire neighborhoods exactly as they were two centuries ago. With just over thirty thousand residents, most have found employment in the thriving tourism industry.

Paraty is situated in the state of Rio de Janeiro, approximately 253 kilometers from Rio and 330 kilometers from São Paulo. The currency used in Brazil is the Brazilian real (BRL).

Before Portugal colonized the area, it was inhabited by the Guaianás Indians. In their language, the word "paraty" meant "fish river," a name that the colonizers chose to retain.

During its first two centuries, Paraty was a significant port city. Treasures were transported here by wagons and then shipped to Portugal. However, the discovery of gold mines in Rio de Janeiro led to the decline of Paraty's importance. The city's provinciality held back its development, seemingly freezing it in time.

But in the middle of the twentieth century, Brazilians themselves began to appreciate the tranquility and beauty of this area. Since then, Paraty's significance as a tourist destination has grown, making it an ideal place for a relaxing vacation and an unconventional bohemian center of Brazil.
