Transportation in Cambodia

Public transportation in Cambodia: its peculiarities and ticket prices.

Public transportation in Cambodia is practically non-existent. Most locals rely on scooters, bikes, or bicycles for their daily commute. Cargo is often transported using aging and worn-out trucks. Urban transportation options include buses, taxis, mopeds, motor rickshaws, and cycle rickshaws. Buses are primarily available in major cities, while the taxi service is underdeveloped due to the low income of the population and the limited ability of most citizens to afford it. Taxis mainly cater to tourists.

The most popular form of public transportation in Cambodia is mopeds, which can carry up to four passengers, and motor rickshaws, essentially carts with two rows of seats attached to mopeds. Prices are negotiable, and bargaining is often necessary. Within major cities, the fares for this type of transportation typically stay within the range of 1-2 USD. Taxis may cost more, but bargaining is still recommended.

Cambodia boasts many navigable rivers, offering water transportation options for travelers. Speedboats operate along the Mekong River, serving routes to Kampong Thom, Kratiech, and Steungtraeng. Numerous small and large boats are available for river excursions and general transportation purposes.

One of the major bus companies is Sorya Transportation, and its bus station is located in downtown Phnom Penh. The company operates one of Cambodia's most extensive route networks. For example, a fare to Sihanoukville city costs about 25,000 KHR, which is approximately 6 USD. The duration of the trip is about 5.5 hours.

As for car and motorcycle cabs, fares are typically negotiated. In Phnom Penh, there are two companies that provide metered fares: Taxi Choice and Taxi Global. These companies charge USD 1 for the first 2 kilometers and USD 0.1 for each subsequent 200 meters.
