History of the City of Larnaca
Larnaca claims to be the oldest city on the island, with archaeological relics dating back over 6,000 years. According to legend, Larnaca was founded by the grandson of Noah, after whom the city was named - it was then called Kition.
In the course of its thousand-year history, the city has been part of Phoenicia, the Empire of Alexander the Great, the Egyptian Ptolemies, the Roman Empire, Byzantium, the Kingdom of Cyprus, and the Republic of Venice. At the end of the 16th century, Larnaca was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, and after its collapse, it became part of the possessions of the British Empire. It was not until 1960 that Cyprus gained independence, by which time the city was already known by its modern name.
