Guide to Larnaca

The perfect combination of an ancient city and a luxurious modern resort.

The historic city graces the southeastern coast of Cyprus, a legendary island embraced by the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Larnaca serves as the administrative hub for the eponymous district within the Republic of Cyprus, situated just fifty kilometers from the capital, Nicosia.

Its hallmark is the Phoenicia, or Palm, promenade, a central artery of the city. Here, you'll find the city's primary beach, Finikoudes, a picturesque sea harbor, a wooden pier, and a medieval fortress.

Larnaca proudly asserts its claim as the island's oldest city, supported by archaeological discoveries dating back over 6,000 years. Moreover, the enchanting sandy beaches captivate visitors, with many earning the prestigious blue flag for cleanliness.

Tips for tourists

Walking around the city should start at the Phoenicia promenade, where you'll find the beach of the same name, restaurants and the Old Town is just a short walk away.
For beach lovers, the Mackenzie area is the best place to live. There are many new hotels and bars and restaurants right on the beach.
If you can't stand the heat, we recommend traveling in early fall or late spring (air temperature around +25°C).

Airport

Larnaka International Airport is considered the main air harbor of Cyprus. It has luggage storage, car rental, cab service, VIP lounge, free Wi-Fi, Duty Free stores, cafes and other services.

Larnaka Airport is divided into 2 levels: Level 1 is for arriving passengers and Level 2 is for departing passengers. Both levels offer passengers a traditional range of services including parking lots, car rental offices, bank branches and currency exchange offices, rest areas, free internet, stores and restaurants.

Larnaka International Airport provides passengers with SMS flight status (check-in/boarding/departure, arrival/delay).

Airport transfer

At the exit of the airport terminal you will find a shuttle bus stop, a tourist bus stop and a cab rank. The city center is only 8km from the airport, so it should take no more than half an hour by any mode of transport.

The cheapest way to get to the city is to take one of the shuttle buses connecting the airport with Larnaka Central Bus Station. These routes are offered by Zenon Larnaka Buses (buses #417, 419, 425, 429). A ticket costs 1.5 EUR, while the night fare (21:00-4:00) is 2.5 EUR.

A cab ride to the city center costs about 10 EUR (12 EUR at night).

Car rental

The price of car rental in Larnaca depends on the class of car (the cooler, the more expensive), duration of the rental (the longer, the cheaper), equipment (you have to pay for additional equipment), type of insurance (the standard package includes CDW, TP and Third Party), season (in summer it is more expensive than in the "low season") and on average starts from 25-30 EUR.

Larnaca offices may offer car rental without deposit and cash payment, but large companies do not practice this. For registration of the contract you will need a driver's license (you can national) and a passport.

Be aware that Cyprus has left-hand traffic, a lot of "lying" police, but also a lot of signs (inscriptions are duplicated in English). You will have to pay for parking - on average 0.5 EUR.

Transport

Larnaca's public transportation is represented by buses that connect different parts of the city and run every 20-30 minutes. The central station is located just above the start of Finikoudes Boulevard, near the marina, and there is a bus stop on the boulevard itself with a route map and timetable.

Larnaca transportation prices are 1.5 EUR for a single ticket and 5 EUR for a day ticket. Several routes run at night (fare is 2.5 EUR).

Safety

Larnaca is a quiet and safe city, but it's still best to take the usual precautions on the beach, shopping and sightseeing: don't leave valuables unattended, keep large sums of money in the hotel safe, take expensive items out of your car when you leave it parked.

Take care of your health: wear hats and sunglasses with high UV protection at all times, and use sunscreen.
