Basic information about Arkashon

In brief: the past and present of the Arcachon resort.

Where is Arcachon located?

One of the most famous and popular French resorts on the Atlantic coast, Arcachon is located in southwestern France. The city is the administrative center of the agglomeration of Arcachon Bay, its population including the suburbs is about 60 thousand people. Now the agglomeration is part of the department of Gironde, Aquitaine region. Historical roots link Arcachon with the region of Gascony.

From the history of Arcachon.

For centuries, only fishermen's huts could be seen on the deserted coast of the Gulf of Gascony. Arcachon was founded in the 1920s. The first mineral spring was discovered here in 1823. It was only when the fashion for sea bathing reached its peak in the mid-twentieth century that the people of Bordeaux appreciated the charms of this wonderful area.

Already in 1857, Emperor Napoleon II granted the city commune status. In 1862, the construction of the "winter city" began. A quirky mix of different styles formed the face of Arcachon: a Chinese buffet, a Moorish casino and a huge number of luxury villas.

Later, Arcachon became a "city of four seasons" - adding summer, fall and spring towns. Surrounded by natural pine forests, with an excellent set of balneological and climatic advantages, Arcachon today is a large fishing port, a magnificent Atlantic marina and a major commercial center. Every summer the town welcomes more than 90 thousand tourists, and in the other seasons it attracts an additional 15 thousand people.
