Where is Porto Vecchio?
The mysterious and romantic Mediterranean island of Corsica, where Porto Vecchio is located, is famous not only for being the birthplace of Napoleon, but also for its breathtaking coastal scenery. The location of Porto Vecchio makes it one of the most beautiful seaside resorts in France.
This territory belongs to the department of South Corsica. The natural blue-sky bay surrounded by green hills and, last but not least, the wonderful Corsican flavor that is in the air.
Population of Porto Vecchio is not very large - about 11,000 people. Though this is quite predictable given its relatively small area of about 169 km2 and its administrative status.
A little bit of history about Porto Vecchio
The name of the city means "Old Port" in translation. According to legend, Porto Vecchio was founded in time immemorial by the Romans, who gave it its name. At that time, its borders were surrounded by swampy terrain, so the founders did not stay here for long. The first settlers, with the exception of the Christian community, fled the damp land for fear of malaria.
As time went on, the soil changed somewhat and became more suitable for the construction of a port city. That's when the Genoese, representatives of the Bank of St. George, arrived. They actively began adapting the land to their own industrial needs in 1539. Porto Vecchio became the second Genoese fortress city on the east coast of the island after Bastia. Thirty years later, the malaria baton was already taken over by the Corsicans.
It was only during the Second World War that the territory was completely free of the scourge, which had driven away the town's permanent population for centuries. Allied troops were stationed on the island then. They were seriously engaged in the fight against malaria - draining swamps and destroying insect vectors. Cleared of contagion the place appeared in all its glory and was ready to receive enthusiastic travelers. By the second half of the twentieth century, its popularity as a resort began to gain momentum.
