We will tell you about the best beaches in Georgia, their infrastructure and entertainment. We also advise you when it is best to go to the sea and which beach you should choose.
There are many interesting cities and towns in Georgia, but the most attractive place for tourists is the coast. Because of its length, it has concentrated the most important resorts of the country. And if you are planning your vacation at one of the Georgian beaches, you just need the following information.
Georgian sea
Georgia is home to many interesting cities and towns, but the most attractive destination for tourists is the coastline. Thanks to its length, it encompasses the country's main resorts. If you're planning your vacation on one of Georgia's beaches, the following information is essential.
The western part of Georgia is washed by the waters of the Black Sea. The seabed along the entire coastline is rocky and pebbly. The water surprises with its transparency and cleanliness. It is extremely rare for the Chorokh River to carry leaves and tree branches into the sea.
Entering the sea is convenient as the descent is gradual and almost imperceptible. It is comfortable for beachgoers, especially those with small children.
Important! Make sure to buy special rubber slippers to avoid injuring your feet when entering the water.
Water temperature
Throughout the Georgian coastline, the average water temperature reaches around +25°C. Sometimes, cold currents and storms make swimming impossible. In winter, the water in the Black Sea does not freeze and maintains a temperature of around +10°C.
Important! The most optimal month for a vacation is considered to be August. By this time, the sea is already well heated, and the air is not as humid.
When to visit - weather conditions
Georgia has a predominantly subtropical climate. The weather conditions are favorable for a great vacation. The tourist season starts in May and ends in late October. The warm climate is suitable for both adults and children.
In summer, the average air temperature ranges from +25°C to +30°C, while in winter, it fluctuates between +6°C and +17°C.
Beach resorts in Georgia
The beaches in Georgia are of lower quality compared to those in Turkey, but they are still popular among tourists. Georgian vacations attract those who want to combine beach relaxation with city walks.
The most popular resorts in Georgia are located along the coast of the Black Sea. The beaches at the resorts are mainly pebbly, but there are also some sandy beaches. If you are interested in wild beaches, you will need some patience to reach them as they can be difficult to access.
When going on vacation, you should decide which resort suits you best. Some people feel comfortable on warm sandy beaches, while others prefer the natural massage of pebbles on their back and feet.
Georgian resorts stretch along the Black Sea coastline for over 100 km. Let's explore some of the most popular ones.
Batumi
Batumi is the most popular resort in Georgia. It is one of the most developed cities in the country. During the season, the city’s promenade is always crowded with vacationers. The entire street is decorated with exotic plants, palm trees, various sculptures, and equipped with bike lanes and benches.
Beaches
There are several beaches at the resort. The total length is about 7 km, and they are all pebble beaches. During the holiday season, they are quite crowded, making the coast look less clean. But if you swim farther from the central part of the beach, there are fewer people, and the water is much cleaner.
The descent to the sea is comfortable, but due to the pebbles, it's better to swim in special water shoes.
Important! The coziest beach in Batumi is near the Botanical Garden. Few tourists know about it, so it's always clean and uncrowded.
Batumi beaches are all well-equipped:
- There are changing cabins, toilets, and freshwater showers.
- Sunbathing on stones with a towel is uncomfortable — renting a sunbed is necessary.
- Umbrella and lounger rental is available.
- All services are paid. For example, a shower costs 1 Georgian lari, and a changing cabin costs 50 tetri.
Where to eat
If you get hungry, you’ll find cafes or takeaway vendors right on the beach. You can get a decent meal at a reasonable price.
Entertainment
The resort offers the widest selection of water activities for all ages.
Gonio and Kvariati
The villages are located near Batumi but have little in common with the city, apart from the beach. Holidays in Gonio and Kvariati are ideal for those seeking peace and quiet. The infrastructure in these villages is minimally developed.
Prices for food and accommodation can be 30–50% higher than in Batumi. If you're planning to stay in one of these villages, it's best to book accommodation in advance.
Beach
The beaches in Gonio and Kvariati are wide and covered with large pebbles. Unlike other Georgian resorts, the entrance to the sea is also rocky with large stones.
The sea is much cleaner than in Batumi. In Gonio, the descent into the water is steeper than in Kvariati, so families with children are advised to swim in the southern part of Gonio, closer to Kvariati.
Beach facilities:
- There is almost no natural shade. You can find shelter from the sun by renting a gazebo, hammock, umbrella, or bringing your own. For example, renting an umbrella costs around 0.8 EUR.
- The beach has showers and changing cabins.
Where to eat
There are many cafes on the beach where you can try local cuisine. You can also grab a snack from beach vendors.
Entertainment
Kvariati doesn’t have a designated pedestrian zone, but it has a diving center — the only place in Georgia where divers can train professionally.
In Gonio, there is a large area for walking and cycling. You can rent bicycles, motorcycles, or pedal boats there.
Sarpi
Sarpi is a small village located on the border with Turkey. It is considered to be the cleanest resort in Georgia. As a result, prices for many services are unreasonably high. The village is situated near a busy road used by trucks traveling to Turkey. There is a border post near the beach, which means that vacationers are forced to breathe in exhaust fumes and listen to noise.
The water in the sea is warm and clean, and the shoreline is made up of large stones. The entry into the water is not very steep.
Important! If you are planning a vacation with small children, it is advisable to consider other beaches. Due to the heavy traffic on the road, it is not safe for children to be on the beach.
Beach
The beach in the resort is small but well-maintained. It is covered with large pebbles. It is fully equipped with all the necessary amenities for relaxation. The prices for renting sun loungers and umbrellas are similar to other resorts.
Where to еat
There are mini-markets, cafes, and restaurants, but they are located on the opposite side of the road from the beach. Be prepared to cross the busy road several times a day.
Entertainment
In addition to typical beach activities, Sarpi has two cliffs equipped for cliff diving. There are no other notable activities on the beach in Sarpi.
Chakvi
Chakvi is a small village filled with the scent of eucalyptus. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful, and the eucalyptus groves have a positive effect on the body.
This resort is suitable for those planning a short stay. Prices are affordable for most visitors.
The sea water, unlike the beach, is clean and transparent.
Beach
The beach is covered with medium-sized pebbles mixed with sand, which makes it more comfortable to relax. There are few tourists, so it's a peaceful place to unwind.
Beach facilities at the resort:
- The infrastructure is underdeveloped — part of the beach area is neglected.
- No organized cleaning — cigarette butts and other litter may be found.
Where to eat
There are a few modest cafes and small shops in the village.
Entertainment
The beach infrastructure in Chakvi is poorly developed, so it’s difficult to plan active leisure. Available attractions include a botanical garden and a national park.
Kobuleti
Kobuleti is a resort that is closest to Batumi in terms of infrastructure development. Tourists love this resort not only for its great beach but also for the opportunity to receive medical treatment. Kobuleti specializes in treating heart diseases and musculoskeletal disorders.
The prices for accommodation and food are lower compared to other resorts in Georgia.
The water in the sea is crystal clear, and the descent into the water is comfortable, with a gentle slope.
Beach
The beach is about 10 km long - modern and clean. The surface consists of a mixture of black magnetic sand and medium-sized pebbles. There are not as many vacationers as in Batumi.
Along the coastline, there is a pedestrian zone for strolling along the beach.
Where to eat
In the summer, there are numerous cafes and restaurants operating on the beach.
Entertainment
Despite the developed beach infrastructure, you will not find a lot of interesting places and entertainment on the beach. During the day, you can ride a jet ski, and in the evening, you can go to a disco.
Grigoleti
This is one of the smallest resorts in Georgia. Tourists value Grigoleti for its healing black sand, which has a beneficial effect on the body.
This destination suits those looking for solitude, as the resort has a poor infrastructure.
Water temperature in the sea can reach up to +30 °C. Entering the water is comfortable — the descent is gentle and shallow.
Service prices are unreasonably overpriced.
Important! When heading to the sea, bring water and a towel with you — you may not have the opportunity to buy them there.
Beach
The beach is completely covered with black sand. Despite the small size, it is poorly maintained. The shoreline is narrow, as trees take up much of the coast.
Beach facilities:
- No places to rent umbrellas or sun loungers.
- No changing cabins available.
- Toilets are hard to find.
- Stray dogs can be found on the beach, disrupting the relaxation experience.
Where to eat
The resort has a few small shops, and in summer, some cafés open. Food should not be a problem.
Entertainment
Tourists can take a walk in the pine forest. You won’t find other entertainment options here.
Ureki and Magnetiti
Ureki or Magnetiti are health resorts, ideal for those looking to improve their health. The beach's healing properties help with musculoskeletal disorders, osteochondrosis, complications after fractures, neurological diseases, and respiratory conditions. There is a sanatorium on the coast for people of all ages.
The sea water sometimes gets murky due to sand, but remains warm, with a gentle and comfortable entry.
The pleasant sea temperature attracts families with children. However, if you’d rather avoid seeing a large number of people with health issues, consider another destination.
Prices are significantly higher than in other resort villages.
Important! The resort used to be a swamp, so there are lots of mosquitoes on the beach.
Beach
The beach is covered with black magnetic sand. It stretches for about 5 km, and despite its size, it gets crowded with tourists. The sand remains hot until the end of September.
The beach is prepared for visitors:
- The infrastructure is well developed.
- Everything needed for comfort is available, but during high season, the beach can become dirty.
- Pharmacies are available if needed.
Where to eat
There is no shortage of cafés in Ureki and Magnetiti. You’ll also find small markets, restaurants, and several Georgian supermarkets.
Entertainment
Besides typical beach activities, small children can ride horses along the shore — a ride costs about 2 EUR. You can also try a hydro-paraglider or parachute ride over the sea. Sanatoriums offer animation services for children.
Anaklia
Anaklia is a small village located on the border with Abkhazia. It is a developed resort with quality hotels and modern architecture.
The prices for accommodation and food are lower compared to other Georgian beaches.
Thanks to its warm climate, the water temperature in Anaklia is comfortable.
Beach
The beaches here are sandy, and there is little rainfall. The area is surrounded by subtropical greenery.
As a relatively new resort, Anaklia has made significant progress in developing its beach infrastructure.
Where to еat
To attract more tourists Anaklia has built numerous nightclubs, bars, restaurants, and other entertainment venues.
Entertainment
There is an aquapark on the beach, which attracts many visitors. The aquapark offers various slides, pools, sunbeds, and changing rooms. There is also a festival area near the aquapark.
Shekvetili
Few people know about Shekvetili Beach, and it’s not very popular among tourists. However, those who come can successfully combine relaxation and treatment. Magnetite improves blood circulation and boosts immunity. A pine forest is located just 30 meters from the beach.
The sea is clean and pleasant for swimming. The entry is gentle, and the shallow water allows bathing even during waves.
Beach
Shekvetili beaches stretch for 3 km and, like in Ureki, are covered with black magnetic sand.
As for beach facilities:
- The beach is still under development. Construction work is ongoing in some areas nearby.
- There is an option to rent a sunbed or umbrella.
- Only central streets are paved; the rest turn into mud during rain.
Where to eat
There are a few small shops and a mini-market near the beach. For fruits and vegetables, tourists go to nearby Ureki or Kobuleti, but the resort administration is working on this issue.
Entertainment
There are currently no bars or discos at the resort.
Which beach to choose
It’s impossible to describe Georgian beaches in one word. However, there are several aspects that both unite and distinguish them.
What unites the beaches
- Most of the beach areas are covered with pebbles.
- There are changing cabins available.
- Freshwater showers are provided.
- At almost every beach, you can rent equipment (umbrella, lounger).
- There are street cafés and mobile vendors.
How beaches differ
- The sea entry depth may be comfortable for some but challenging for others, especially children.
- The entertainment program in Batumi attracts tourists. Other towns cannot offer the same.
- Water temperature varies slightly by resort. For example, in Sarpi people swim until late September, while on other beaches the season is already over.
- The natural beauty is most vivid in Sarpi and Kvariati.
It’s impossible to choose just one beach, as everyone has their own tastes, preferences, and priorities. But visiting Georgia only for a beach holiday isn’t worth it — it’s also about landmarks, cuisine, and friendly locals.
