History of Corfu Resort

Tourists often ask the question, "If Corfu is the capital of the island, what is Kerkyra?". Kerkira and Corfu are different names for the same city, the capital of Corfu Island. The name "Kerkyra" is considered to be indigenous to Greece. According to myths, Poseidon fell in love with the nymph Kerkyra and hid her from prying eyes on an island in the middle of the Ionian Sea. The name "Corfu" was given to the capital by the Byzantines and translates as "city of mountains".

Corfu was founded in the 8th century BC by Greek colonists from Corinth. Over the centuries, the city passed into the hands of the Romans, Byzantines, Goths, Venetians, Turks, French, and British. This could not but affect its cultural appearance: in the historical center of the city architectural traditions of different epochs and states are intertwined. This, however, is what gives Corfu its special charm.
