The Riviera Maya is a true gem of the Mexican coast. Today it has over 100 kilometers of gorgeous beaches with crumbly silver sand. Our small guide to the beaches of the Riviera Maya will help you get your bearings and decide which beach to choose.
Xcacel Beach
One of the best beaches in Riviera Maya is without a doubt Xcacel. It is located in the nature reserve of the same name. The famous underground lakes - senoto wells, lagoons, mangroves attract a huge number of vacationers. During the period from November to May, carretta turtles lay eggs on this beach.
Entry to the beach is free, but recently they have started asking for a 20 MXN donation. Plus, beach hours are limited, and at 5 pm you'll be politely asked to vacate your spot. Pay attention to the flags that are posted on the beach, because the waves in this place sometimes reach an alarming size.
Tulum Beach
The famous Tulum Beach is located near the ancient ruins of the same name. The beach is also characterized by fairly large waves, which attracts surfers. On the beach works a large number of restaurants, clubs, and bars. All the most popular parties of Riviera Maya are held here. Therefore, prices here are higher than average, and budget vacationers should choose a place closer to the village of the same name.
Puerto Aventuras and Akumal
The quietest and cozy beach areas are Puerto Aventuras and Akumal. They are the ones that are recommended for quiet family vacations. On Akumal beach, you can observe the life of large sea turtles.
Xpu Ha Beach
A true oasis of peace and tranquility can be found at Xpu Ha Beach. You'll also find a charming lagoon and a cenote here. On the downside, entry to the beach is only possible through private property and it is chargeable (50 or 40 MXN). However, if you spend more than 120 MXN at the clubs or restaurants on the beach, be sure to keep your receipt and you'll get a refund when you leave the beach.
Beaches of Playa del Carmen
The biggest, busiest and most famous beaches can be found in the heart of Playa del Carmen. They stretch along the hotel line, and a host of restaurants, bars and entertainment venues enliven the beach life.
Casumel Island blocks Playacar beaches from the waves, and the fine sand and gentle slope into the sea are an added plus.
