Basic information about the capital of Monaco

The city's past and present.

Monaco, or Monaco-Ville, is the official capital of the Principality of Monaco, ranking first in the world in terms of population (36,000 Monegasque inhabitants). Monaco-Ville is located in the southern part of Monaco on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

Over the past few years, Monaco has witnessed an annual influx of around 600 new residents. Many millionaires choose to invest their wealth in real estate within Monaco due to its status as a tax haven, making it an attractive destination for capital relocation.

The picturesque coastline of Monaco is adorned with classic multi-storey houses, and the price per square meter averages around 50,000 EUR. This contributes to Monaco's reputation as one of the top 10 most expensive countries in the world.

Monaco comprises several distinct areas, including Monaco-Ville, Monte Carlo, Condamine, and Fontvieille, which often blend seamlessly due to the absence of clear boundaries. The city of Monaco itself has a relatively small permanent population of just 975 residents. However, the constant influx of tourists creates an illusion of a densely populated city and Principality.

While the official language of Monaco is French, you'll find that almost everyone here understands and communicates in English. Remarkably tiny, the Principality of Monaco covers a mere 2 square kilometers in area. Interestingly, Monaco holds the distinction of being the second smallest country globally, following only the Vatican.

Monaco boasts a rich history that traces its roots back to ancient times. Settlements of Phoenicians and Greeks date as far back as the 10th century BC. However, the modern history of Monaco begins in the 13th century. In 1215, construction of a fortress commenced within the Principality as part of the establishment of the Republic of Genoa.

By the close of the 13th century, precisely in 1297, a new state emerged on the world map—the Principality of Monaco. The reins of power were seized by Francesco Grimaldi, who, disguised as a Franciscan monk, infiltrated the fortress and opened its gates to his supporters.

January 8th marks Independence Day in Monaco, commemorating this historic event. The Grimaldi dynasty has been at the helm of Monaco for over 700 years, shaping its unique and enduring identity.
