Carvoeiro's hiking trails combine cliff-top walks around the town with grotto passages. Several of the most beautiful grottoes are located near the lighthouse at Cabo de Carvoeiro. They are fenced off, access to them is restricted, you can only observe how strong nature is and how fragile the cliffs are.
Walking routes in Carvoeiro will lead tourists to the remains of the walls of the former city fort of the XVII century, archaeological and historical sites located nearby. Carvoeiro walking routes also include a visit to the unique Algar Seco mountain formation, which is located 750 meters from the main square of the resort. Details of the itinerary can be found on the website.
For those looking for more challenging walking routes, we suggest the 11-kilometer Seven Hanging Valleys Walk. The average length of the walk is 6 hours. Sneakers or trekking boots, a hat, water and sunscreen are required for the walk. The hiking adventure starts in the Centianes Valley and follows to Albandeira. Hikers follow the coastline where stunning beaches are encountered. It is not recommended to go out on the route in strong winds or in winter due to large waves, as the coastline runs along marked sections of cliffs. It is strictly forbidden to approach the edges of the cliffs. The average height difference during the hike is from 5 to 50 meters.
We recommend including a visit to the Benagil Caves in your Carvoeiro itinerary. One trip to about 20 sea caves, grottoes, as well as inaccessible from land amazing secluded beaches takes almost the whole day. The sea tour starts at 10:00 and ends at 19:00. During the day, tourists can enjoy the unspoiled beauty of the isolated beach, and then they will be picked up again by the tour boat.
