The rainy season in Praslin typically starts in January and lasts for approximately two months, until March. Even during this period, the weather can still be quite pleasant, with intermittent rain rather than constant downpours. Consequently, when the rainy season begins in Praslin, there is a slight decrease in the number of tourists, but some visitors still come. The tropical climate of the region means that outside of the rainy season, precipitation is quite rare, offering vacationers plenty of sunshine and a delightful sea breeze. Temperatures range around +29°C from December to May and about +27°C from the end of May to the end of November.
From May to October, southeast monsoons bring dry and cooler weather, accompanied by higher waves and seaweed along the eastern coast of the island.
From November through April, the northwest monsoon brings hot, humid weather and calm seas to Praslin. Algae can be found primarily along the southwest coast of the island. The rainy season, although it brings heavy rains, is generally not a cause for concern, as the rains mostly occur at night. Temperatures rarely drop below +25°C, except during the nighttime hours.
Praslin's Vegetation and Wildlife
The vegetation on Praslin Island is lush and abundant, resembling a primitive African jungle with intertwining roots, lianas, and palm leaves. This unique reserve unveils its secrets to visitors, and the entrance fees contribute to maintaining the reserve and preserving the habitat of rare species. Here, you can marvel at the world's largest fruit from the coco de mer palm, which can weigh up to about 20 kilograms and grows exclusively in this location.
Exploring a forest like this can be risky, which is why there are designated safe paths that allow you to admire its beauty without putting yourself in danger. Praslin's animal life is diverse and fascinating. It is home to the endemic black parrot and nightingale, along with several extremely rare species of geckos. The island's nickname, the "Island of Birds," is well-deserved, as it serves as a resting place for migratory birds.
Beneath the ocean's surface, you'll encounter an array of creatures that you may have only read about in books. From colorful butterfly fish and clownfish to graceful stingrays and elusive octopuses, the underwater world is teeming with life. While there are sharks in the vicinity, such as reef sharks and hammerhead sharks, these potentially dangerous fish tend to stay far from the shores, and shark attacks are exceedingly rare.
