Sri Lanka is an island nation, a democratic socialist republic located southeast of the Indian peninsula. The currency of the country is the Sri Lankan rupee, LKR. The Unawatuna resort is located 108 kilometers south of Colombo, Sri Lanka's largest city and its second capital. Near the resort is the historical and administrative center of Galle, a major port city in the southwest of Sri Lanka and the capital of the Southern Province.
The population of Unawatuna is mainly engaged in the tourism business and fishing. This creates a special atmosphere of hospitality and constant employment for the local people. Unawatuna Bay attracts many tourists because of the warm ocean, which is covered by two rows of coral reef.
Unawatuna was founded a long time ago, back in the early days of Sri Lanka's first settlements, people lived on these shores. Unawatuna is even mentioned in the ancient Indian epic Ramayana. This epic is not honored on the island, simply because, according to many scholars, it reflects the struggle between the islanders and mainland India.
The island of tea plantations, once called Ceylon or Lion Island or Singhaladwila, is considered one of the centers of Buddhism. The sapling of the tree under which Buddha received enlightenment is said to grow here. In 1972, the island of Ceylon became the Republic of Sri Lanka.
