The temperature of the Indian Ocean remains fairly consistent throughout the year at around +28°C. It may cool down a bit at night, but it generally stays above the air temperature, which can drop to +22-25°C.
While tides are typically more noticeable in the open ocean, Unawatuna Bay stands out as an exception. Here, the tides are less pronounced, likely due to the protective coral reef that lines the Sri Lankan coastline in this area and the nearby Hindustan massif.
The Indian Ocean's pleasant temperature makes it an ideal location for diving and snorkeling, a fact that many resort guests have come to appreciate. Wave conditions can vary along the beach, with lower waves closer to the cliffs, sheltered by the reefs.
On the southeast side, toward the bay's exit, waves can reach heights of up to two meters. Some parts of the beach are covered in small pebbles, while others have sandy shores. It's important to exercise caution when entering the water in rocky areas.
Additionally, be mindful of the oceanic coastal currents at the southern end of the beach, which are almost non-existent in the north, near the cliffs, thanks to the protective reefs. The waves are also calmer in that area, making it a safer choice if you plan to swim with children.
