General information about Zermatt

The small village of Zermatt was established in the fifteenth century when the first settlers made this area their home. Over the centuries, this quaint village has transformed into a modern resort that is now widely recognized. Zermatt is situated in the southern part of the Valais canton, close to the border between Switzerland and Italy. Zermatt has a rich history as a spa resort, with its origins dating back to 1838 when the first hotel, founded by physician Josef Lauber, opened its doors. The development of Zermatt as a popular destination was significantly boosted by the construction of a railroad in 1898.
