Thai Customs

We will tell you about the airport declaration system, what you can and cannot bring in/out of Thailand and much more.

Thai Customs Regulations

Exotic countries can be enticing but also come with unfamiliar cultures and laws. Understanding customs regulations is essential for a smooth trip. Let's explore the possibilities and restrictions at Thai customs.

Goods Declaration System

Thailand has a system of "corridors" at customs checkpoints to declare your luggage properly. Choose the right corridor based on your intentions.

"Green Corridor"

The Green Corridor is for those not declaring their baggage. Here are the allowed norms:

  • Personal items up to 10,000 THB (300 USD)
  • Alcoholic beverages (up to 1 liter)
  • 200 cigarettes or 250 grams of smoking tobacco

Estimating the value of personal belongings without price tags can be challenging. Only unpacked items are subject to inspection. Exceeding the limits may result in fines up to 1,000 USD and luggage scrutiny.

"Red Corridor"

The Red Corridor is for goods that require declaration and customs duty. Consider these points:

  • Goods worth over 80,000 THB (2,600 USD) will be sent for customs clearance.
  • If you frequently visit Thailand with valuable equipment, register it as re-imported to avoid duty payments.
  • Drones and drones must be registered; failure to do so can lead to fines or jail time.
  • Declare jewelry purchased in Thailand before leaving; retain the purchase receipt for this purpose.

Prohibited Items in Thailand

It's important to know what you can't import or export from Thailand:

  • Fake money
  • Counterfeits and pirated products
  • Wild animals and stuffed animals
  • Publications and articles of obscene content
  • Drugs and weapons
  • Corals, shells, jewelry (jewelry must be declared)
  • Buddha images and figurines above 13 cm
  • Ivory or tortoise shell items
  • Electronic cigarettes and hookahs

Exotic Fruit Shipping

You can bring exotic fruits from Thailand, but there's an exception:

  • You are not allowed to take durian, known for its strong odor, out of Thailand or on domestic airline flights.

For other fruits, it's recommended to pack them in your luggage or even hand luggage to ensure they arrive well preserved.

Tax Free Refund

Tax Free Refund in Thailand

Tourists in Thailand can enjoy a 7% tax refund for eligible purchases made at stores displaying the "VAT Refund" sign. Here's how to claim your tax refund:

  • While making a purchase, ask the sales clerk for a special form. You'll need to provide your passport and departure date.
  • Upon arrival at the airport, proceed to the Customs Department office (before check-in) with your completed form and receipts. Customs officials will stamp your form.
  • After clearing passport control, visit the VAT Refund for Tourists counter. Be prepared to show the goods you purchased, and you'll receive your tax refund.

Make sure your total purchases amount to at least 5,000 THB (approximately 150 USD) to be eligible for Tax Free at the airport. This process will help you navigate customs inspection in Thailand with ease.
