The low season in Thailand falls between March and October when most vacationers choose to visit other warm destinations around the world. However, this is when traveling to Thailand is typically the most budget-friendly.
On the other hand, Thailand's high season starts in November and continues until the end of February. During this period, popular European resorts experience cooler weather, prompting tourists to flock to this tropical country.
It's worth noting that air travel to Thailand during the high season tends to be more expensive due to increased customer demand.
Thailand Vacation in Winter
Winter is considered the optimal period for vacationing in the country. Tourists often visit during this season to celebrate New Year and Christmas. On average, daytime temperatures range from +7°C to +30°C, while nighttime temperatures are around +10°C to +15°C. However, the northern territories have slightly cooler climates, with temperatures 3-6°C lower than in the southern provinces.
Generally, the weather throughout the country is dry and warm, sometimes even arid. These conditions make it possible for tourists to choose a winter vacation in Thailand in any direction. Beach vacations in places like Pattaya, Phi Phi Phi Island, Samui, and other resorts remain enjoyable. Phuket may experience brief rain a couple of times during the season.
In the northern provinces of Pai, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai, the humidity is lower, providing comfortable conditions for touring the remarkable sites of these cities.
However, the favorable weather during winter also leads to the downside of increased crowds and higher prices. If that's not a concern for you, exploring Thailand during this period is worthwhile.
Spring in Thailand presents the most challenging weather for residents from comparatively cooler parts of the world. The typical daytime temperature is around +35°C, while nighttime temperatures hover around +25°C, with occasional daytime highs reaching up to +40°C.
During this season, humidity rises, though the rainy season is still a distant prospect. Towards the end of spring, the first raindrops may moisten the sandy beaches. Until then, the air seems to envelop your body, making it hard to find relief from the heat.
Many tourists find it challenging to stay outdoors during the day, so during spring, they often opt for seaside resorts where the weather is easier to endure. Here, they can relax in the shade of sun loungers and palm trees, occasionally cooling off in the sea with temperatures averaging around +29°C.
Only towards the end of spring does the intense heat begin to subside, making way for the approaching rainy season. Despite the hot weather in Thailand during spring, there are regions with more moderate temperatures. For example, the northeastern, eastern, or central provinces are not as scorching hot but experience more frequent rain.
When it comes to resort vacations, spring is an ideal time for budget-conscious travelers. Even popular resorts like Phuket, Krabi, and the islands of Chang and Kud offer noticeably lower prices compared to other periods.
Many travel agents do not recommend traveling to the country during this period, citing heavy rainfall. There is some truth in their advice. The rains and increasing winds make the sea choppy, with high waves and underwater currents.
Sometimes, even experienced swimmers are hesitant to enter the water during this period. It's also best to avoid traveling if you have a low tolerance for high humidity. However, Thailand's summer weather can be an ideal time for a vacation, especially if your goal is to explore the country's sights.
But you'll need to explore them on the mainland, where the rains aren't as prolonged. On the islands, there can be frequent but relatively short rain showers, mostly in the evening and at night, providing some welcome coolness.
The air temperature in the resorts generally does not exceed +35°C, while the water warms up to +28°C. Another advantage of traveling during this period is that there are fewer tourists, so the beaches are more spacious, and the sights can be seen without too much crowding.
The hottest island during this time is Samui, while the wettest is Phuket. The north and northeast of the country tend to be more comfortable for vacationing.
Autumn is considered the off-season in Thailand. At the beginning of fall, the weather in Thailand may still surprise you with occasional rain, but it's generally shorter in duration compared to the previous season.
The temperature gradually decreases to around +30°C, and the water temperature remains at around +26°C for most of the season. During this time, there are fewer tourists, making it easier to find accommodation and rent motorcycles. While the sea is ideal for swimming, there are more sunny days, and wind gusts decrease. By November, when the country's high season begins, beaches and excursions become more crowded.
Temperatures no longer rise above +30°C, and the rains become less frequent, primarily affecting the southeastern part of the country. In the fall, you can enjoy a pleasant vacation not only in the resorts but also in the northern provinces of the kingdom, including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai, and Mae Hong Son. After the rainy season, the vegetation starts to grow and renew intensively, showcasing the beauty of natural landscapes.
