Many people know where Dallas is located - in the state of Texas in the United States of America, at the very spot where three of its tributaries flow into the Trinity River. The river itself runs through the center of the city and in the spring constantly threatens to flood. Therefore, the embankments of the city are quite high - at least 15 meters. Today the population of Dallas is more than 1,200,000 people - more on the state lives only in San Antonio and Houston. And in the United States as a whole, the city ranks ninth in the number of inhabitants.
Dallas was founded in 1841, when one John Neely Bryan organized a small trading post on this spot. A year later, several people already lived here, then more people joined them, and the settlement was called Peter's Settlement. Even without official status, in 1845, the little town got a new name - Dallas, after the surname of the current vice-president of the United States. It took another ten years for the settlement to receive official status, and then five more years for it to be recognized as a city.
The Civil War era helped the town flourish. At that time, it became a supply center for the troops. And in 1872, a railroad line was laid through it, although it was originally supposed to run 32 kilometers from the town. But granted free land in the area of the city convinced the management of the Texas Pacific Railroad Company to make adjustments to the construction plans. This contributed to the development of the city and increased its population.
Dallas entered the 20th century as the center of the cotton trade in its region, and in another 30 years it became the center of the oil trade when an oil vein was found near the city. Also in 1930, Dallas became famous for a couple of criminals, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker.
And in 1963 another bloody trace was written in the history of the city - the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in the center of the city. Apparently, these historic events earned Dallas the nickname "City of Hate." Although it also has a simpler unofficial name - "Big D".
The latter was awarded to the city, rather, for a desperate desire to smooth over unpleasant events. Soon the Fort Worth Dallas airport was opened here, a national convention of the Republican Party was held, and a highly rated TV series of the same name was filmed.
Today, the city continues to hold leading positions in cotton production, oil refining, but has also become the center of fashion and finance in the region.
