Basic information about San Francisco

A little history of San Francisco and what the city is living today.

California's most picturesque city is spread over 40 hills on the west coast of the United States. Its area is more than 600 square kilometers, of which land is only 121 square kilometers. The rest is the waters of the Golden Gate Strait, the Pacific Ocean, and San Francisco Bay.

Frisco is located in a seismically unfriendly zone (the San Andreas Fault) and shakes about 100 times a month. But don't worry, you won't feel the tremors - the only thing that will indicate an earthquake is the slightly displaced paintings on the walls. San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California and the second most dense in the country.

San Francisco is a relatively young city, founded in the 1770s. Before that, the territory beyond the Golden Gate Strait was hidden by very dense fogs that had "settled" there.

The first to land on the peninsula was a Spanish officer Juan Manuel de Ayala. He was followed by monks. A fort and the church of St. Francis of Assisi were built on the shore. A village was established nearby.

Until 1848, it had a population of about 500 people. During the gold rush, the population began to increase rapidly, including Chinese. In 1906, the city was badly damaged by an earthquake and fire, but was quickly rebuilt.
