Dulles International Airport is located 42 km west of downtown Washington, in the state of Virginia, USA.

How to get to downtown Washington from Dulles Airport

The bus stop is located in front of the main terminal near Exit No. 2A.

Bus

You can reach the city center from the airport by Virginia Breeze buses. The bus operates only three times a day on a limited schedule.

  • Travel time: 45 minutes.

  • Fare: 15 USD. Tickets can be purchased from a vending machine inside the airport.

Bus + Metro

You can take the MetroBus No. 5A to the L’Enfant Plaza or Rosslyn metro stations. To reach downtown, take the metro (Blue Line) to the Nw 14th St & Nw R St station. A detailed route is available on the website.

  • Fare. The bus ticket costs 2 USD and can be purchased at the ticket office inside Terminal 4 or from special ticket machines. The metro fare ranges from 2.25 to 6.75 USD (depending on travel distance).

Car Rental

All car rental companies are located at the airport: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, National, Sixt, Thrifty. Complimentary shuttle buses operated by each rental company transport clients between the rental lot and the terminal.

Cost. The price for a mid-size car starts at 50–60 USD.

Taxi

To find the taxi stand, go to the lower level of the terminal, then down the ramp to exits #2 or #6. Signs marked “Ground Transportation” or “Taxi” will guide you. You can find a detailed map on the airport’s official website.

How to get to Washington DC train station and bus station from Dulles Airport

Trip time to the Washington DC train station and bus station is about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Bus + Metro

On the 5A bus line, you need to first get to the stop N Moore St & Rosslyn Station. Then on the subway take the blue/orange/silver line, the stop you need is Metro Center. At this stop, transfer to the red line, which will take you to Union Station (bus & train station stop).

How to get to downtown Washington, D.C. from Ronald Reagan Airport

Washington Ronald Reagan National Airport is located in Virginia, Arlington County, about 7 km south of downtown Washington, DC. Of the airports serving the city, it is the closest to the center.

Bus + Metro

The bus stop is located across from the terminal exit.

Route. On exiting the terminal, take any "Airport Shuttle" bus. At the "Terminal B/C" or "Parking Garages B and C" stop, you will be on a covered bridge that exits to the Metrorail station. From that station, you need to take the yellow/green subway line and ride to the downtown stop, U Street/African-American-Amer Civil War Memorial/ Cardozo.

  • Trip time is about 30 minutes.

  • Schedule of operation. The airport shuttle runs around the clock.

Taxi

The trip duration is between 10 and 20 minutes.

Location of taxi stands:

  • From Terminal A, after exiting the baggage claim area, turn right. Taxis are located on the curb closest to the terminal.

  • In Terminals B and C, on the first floor near the exit, you will find clearly marked taxi pick-up areas.

Important! Passengers with reduced mobility are advised to contact the dispatch service 24 hours before arrival at 703-417-4333 to ensure a specially equipped vehicle is available if needed.

Transfer

You can book an airport transfer from Ronald Reagan Airport to your chosen address in Washington in advance (for example, at www.carngo.com). The driver will meet you in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name.

Car Rental

Car rental counters are located on the first floor of Terminal A. A free “Parking/Rental Car” shuttle operates between the terminals and the rental car lots. You can also walk following the “Parking Garage A” signs — it takes about 10 minutes from Terminals A and B, and 15 minutes from Terminal C.

Bus + Metro

Route. The Yellow/Blue and Red Metro lines connect the airport with the main bus terminal and Union Station.

  • On the Yellow Line, travel to Gallery Place–Chinatown station, then transfer to the Red Line.

How to Get to Downtown Washington from Baltimore Airport

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is located 65 km from the city center. The driving time is approximately 1 hour.

Public Transport

The total travel time to downtown Washington is around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

  • First, take the shuttle bus that runs from the airport to BWI Amtrak/Marc Station.

  • From there, board the high-speed train PALMETTO and travel to Union Station.

  • If your destination is in the very heart of Washington, take the metro and use the Red Line to reach the downtown stop — K St NW & 17th St NW.

Fares

  • Rides on shuttle buses are free of charge.

  • Tickets for the high-speed train can be purchased at the station or directly from the conductor on board. The fare is 14 USD.
