General information about Poreč

In a nutshell: the past and present of Porec.

Where is Poreč?

The city is located in the western part of the Istrian peninsula, on the coast of the beautiful Adriatic Sea. Historically, it was an important cargo port, but over time, Poreč has lost much of its significance in that regard. Today, the city primarily thrives on tourism, with fishing and agriculture also playing significant roles.

The population of Poreč is only 8 thousand people, and including the suburbs, it totals 17 thousand residents. Like other settlements in Croatia, Porec is multinational, with a population including Serbs, Slovenes, Albanians, and Italians.

The national currency is the Croatian kuna (HRK).

History of the Settlement of Poreč

Human settlement in this area dates back to prehistoric times. Poreč was founded as a city about two thousand years ago during the reign of Octavian Augustus. At that time, it bore the Latin name Parentium.

Poreč changed hands among various rulers throughout its history, including Byzantines, Franks, Slavs, Ostgoths, and Lombards. After the Western Roman Empire's decline, the city became part of Venice, then Austria, and later fell under the control of Napoleon. Following World War I, it became part of Italy. After World War II, Poreč became part of the multi-ethnic Yugoslavia, and after Yugoslavia's dissolution, it became a part of Croatia.
