Guide to Pula

Trip to Pula

Pula is a popular tourist destination because all possible advantages have converged in one city. From comfortable weather and luxurious nature to two thousand years of history and affordable prices. Back in the days of ancient Rome, Pula was already the administrative center of the Istrian province.

Now it is the largest city of Istria with developed infrastructure and its own airport. Fishing, winemaking, shipbuilding and construction industry are also actively developing here. In honor of Pula is even named an asteroid, because in the XIX century in the city worked a famous observatory, which was responsible for the discovery of almost 30 asteroids.

In fact, Pula was founded even earlier. It was one of the first ancient Greek colonies in the north of the Adriatic. Already later the Romans came here and appreciated the strategic location of the port city. Many fragments of buildings and structures from those times are still preserved.

Like the whole of Istria, at different times Pula belonged to the Venetians, Lombards, Ostgoths, Franks, was part of Austria, fell under occupation, passed to Italy, and later became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In 1991, Pula became part of independent Croatia.

Tours to Pula

Pula is home to one of the most beautiful beaches in Istria, Stinjan, surrounded by forest. The beach at Cape Kamenjak, which is located right on the territory of a natural park, is also incredibly nice. There are sandy beaches Bijeca, pebble beaches Duga Uvala and island beaches Crveni Otok. Fans of active water activities are advised to pay attention to the beaches of Brioni and Ambrela.

The ideal season for a weekend trip to Pula is from May to October. Late fall and winter are cool and wet. Summer is moderately hot, with sea temperatures reaching +25 degrees Celsius. But at this time the beaches are especially crowded. May and September are good for excursions and quieter vacations, with fewer people.

In different years the beauty of Pula was appreciated by such outstanding creators as Michelangelo, Dante Alighieri, Thomas Mann and James Joyce. The clear waters of the Adriatic and the majesty of the ancient city have touched the soul strings and inspired in all centuries.

Pula hosts many events, festivals, performances and fairs. Some of them are right within the walls of the local amphitheater. Who would have thought that the arched walls, dating back to the time of Emperor Vespasian, would be home to performances in the 21st century!
