Punta Cana enjoys a mild maritime tropical climate. As a result, there are no sudden and dramatic temperature changes. On average throughout the year, the temperature stays at +30°C. During the coldest period, winter, the temperature drops to +20°C at night.
The rainy season in Punta Cana begins in May and lasts until July. During this time, it rains frequently and heavily during the day but ends quickly. As well as being important to know when the rainy season starts in Punta Cana, it's worth asking about hurricane season.
It starts in the fall and is usually over by November. But don't worry too much about it. Hurricanes come to the island of Haiti from the west, from the side of the state of the same name. And as they reach the Dominican Republic and its resort area, they become noticeably weaker.
The vegetation and animal life in Punta Cana
Natural vegetation is increasingly rare in Punta Cana. In much of the state, it has been virtually replaced by valuable crops. For example, sugar cane, coconut, royal palms. But rainforests and savannahs are still found in the river valleys.
Mountainsides are still sheltered by evergreen rainforests where you can find campesino and mahogany trees. The higher up the mountains, the fewer deciduous trees are found - they are replaced by conifers. Cacti and thorny bushes grow in the dry areas of the southern part. A special pride of the resort, where tourists are often taken on excursions, is the mangroves on some parts of the coast.
It is from the mangroves that tourists are invited to observe the bizarre local birds, of which there are many. Native wildlife in Punta Cana is not abundant, but it is partly diversified by imported animals. For example, in the XV century Spanish colonists brought here goats, and over time the animals have become feral. Alligators live in some rivers and lakes, and there is a wide variety of shellfish and fish in the shallow sea.
