Fiji's traditional cuisine is rooted in three main elements: seafood, a variety of root vegetables, and coconuts. However, modern Fijian cuisine has been influenced by Chinese, Hindu, and Latin American flavors, causing traditional dishes to be overshadowed by fast food options. Nonetheless, experiencing the authentic taste of traditional Fijian cuisine is highly recommended, even if it means traveling to one of the smaller islands in the archipelago.
Fiji Dishes
Caconda. For this dish, a type of local fish is marinated in lime juice. According to travelers, the fish is incredibly tender and delicious.
Rowrow. This dish can be called a salad. It is based on colocasia leaves with juice or sauce.
Palusame. Colocasia leaves are also used for this dish. But they are cooked in coconut milk.
Cassava. A fried or baked puree of tapioca, coconut milk, bananas, and sugar.
Lovo. This dish gets its name from the way it is prepared. A lovo is a small earthy hearth in which various foods are baked. A lovo dish is a mixture of fish, meat, and fruit cooked in such a hearth.
Vacalolo. Under this name, you will find cassava pudding. This recipe is a clear illustration of the life of the English settlers, who cooked with island products according to the methods they were accustomed to.
