Where is Menton?
Menton is the easternmost point of France's Côte d'Azur. The border with Italy runs right around the resort, so it takes about half an hour to reach the neighboring country from the city center. Menton's western neighbor is the Principality of Monaco, and the majestic coastal Alps protect it from the north.
The population of Menton is only about 30,000 people (mainly French and Italians). However, despite the fact that the town is quite small, it has everything for an excellent vacation: well-developed infrastructure, clean mountain air and azure sea. What else do you need for complete happiness?
History of Menton
When Menton was founded is not exactly known. Archaeologists say that the first settlements in the area date back to prehistoric times. From 1346 to 1848, the city was under the jurisdiction of the Principality of Monaco. It joined France only in 1860 during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte. Menton began to develop as a resort town at the end of the XIX century.
The English and Russian aristocracy began to come here for vacation. During the Second World War, Menton was completely destroyed by numerous bombings and was rebuilt only in the 1960s. Today, Menton proudly bears the title of resort pearl and citrus capital of France and is one of the most favorite places for tourists from all over the world.
