The water temperature in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Saint-Malo becomes comfortable for swimming only in July, when it reaches about +22 °C. Earlier in the season, many vacationers prefer to swim in wetsuits, as the Atlantic waters rarely exceed +18 °C.
The city of Saint-Malo is world-famous for having the highest tides in Europe. Twice every lunar day, the shores of Saint-Malo and Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey experience remarkable fluctuations in the Atlantic Ocean’s water level: the sea can recede up to 18 km, and the incoming tide can reach speeds of up to 6 km/h.
