Historical facts about Neos Marmaras

Neos Marmaras was founded relatively recently in 1922 and because of this it was given the name New Marmaras, which sounds like Neos in Greek. The settlers of the island of Marmara in the Sea of Marmara (near Istanbul) had left their homes for thousands of years. Many of them ended up in Sithonia and created Neos Marmaras.

As early as 1970, after the large shopping center of Porto Karras was built, tourism began to develop in the town. The shipowner Ioannis Karris, who bought part of the old monastery of Grigoriat, was one of the inspirers and promoters of the tourism business.

The ancient history of Neos Marmaras states that as early as the 15th century, the town belonged to the Grigoriath Monastery. It also included the important bay of Balabani, which was protected by the strong walls of an impregnable fortress. Its remains were found during archaeological excavations, and confirmed that there was a Byzantine settlement on the territory of Neos Marmaras.
