Paleokastritsa's Location

The charming and picturesque resort of Paleokastritsa is situated along the coastline of Corfu, just 26 km away from the capital city of the same name. In the past, this 48-square-kilometer area was an independent territorial unit, but since 2011, it has become part of the Corfu administration.

Despite its small size, with its scenic bays and crystal-clear waters, Paleokastritsa is far from resembling a bustling metropolis. The local population of Paleokastritsa consists of just over 5,000 residents, though this number multiplies several times during the tourist season.

The History of Paleokastritsa

The coastal area of Corfu was once known as the island of Scheria and was believed to be the city of the Phaeacians. It is said to be the place where Odysseus' ship was cast ashore, and from here, guided by the Phaeacian king, the ancient Greek hero set out for Ithaca. As a result, the island became a place of reverence for ancient Greek heroes.

Hence, it can be considered that the city's origins trace back to the time of Homer. In his descriptions, he portrayed this place as a paradise, where joy and celebration were constant features.
