Near the green resort town is the La Riserva Naturale Statale nature reserve, established in 1972. The reserve covers an area of 455 hectares and features a breathtaking valley of waterfalls surrounded by ancient mills and the ruins of a metallurgical factory.
The vegetation in Amalfi includes endemic species such as the giant fern Woodwardia. The symbol of the reserve is the salamander. Unique carnivorous plants, Pinguicola hirtiflora, can also be found here.
The valley floor is covered with beech forests, where oaks, lindens, hornbeams, pines, and typical Mediterranean shrubs thrive. The gorges between the cliffs, creating tunnels, serve as ideal habitats for the wildlife of Amalfi, including salamanders, Italian newts, field mice, foxes, badgers, wild boars, and hares.
