Amalfi's cuisine is abundant with various dishes made from fish and seafood, freshly caught by local fishermen. In addition, there are fields with different vegetables and herbs, as well as fruit orchards near the resort town.
In spring, dishes made from escarole salad, chicory, cabbage, celery, Mediterranean herbs, pork, and beans are prepared in the resort town. In the summer, cows return from the high mountain pastures, and delicate ricotta cheese, mozzarella, and various smoked cheeses are made from their milk.
During the summer, the local fishermen become more active, and the local restaurants and cafes offer daily dishes made from fresh fish. Thus, seafood and mountain products "coexist" on the same plate: popular dishes include peppers, shrimp, eggplants, capers, olives, shellfish, zucchini, mussels, and local pasta.
With the arrival of autumn and the first cold weather, the residents of Amalfi start preparing soups from beans, chestnuts, peas, generously seasoned with parsley.
What should you try in Amalfi?
While dining in restaurants and cafes in Amalfi, we recommend trying baked bluefin tuna casserole, squid with potatoes or peas, codfish, and salted anchovies. Octopus purpetielli is another specialty. Small codfish, tilefish, and anchovies are grilled in lemon leaves and served with marinated leek sauce. All this can be enjoyed with Costa d'Amalfi wine.
In addition, Amalfi offers tourists to taste the locally grown variety of lemons called sfusato. Lemons are sliced into thick slices and seasoned with oil, salt, vinegar, and mint. In the summer months, Italians also prepare dishes from zucchini, tomatoes, and peppers.
