The town grew on a hill by the coast, with the nearby Prelius Lake abundant in fish and salt deposits in salt mines.

The modern name of the town was first mentioned in the 9th century when it was part of the Pisan Republic as a key element of the defensive system along the Tyrrhenian coast.
