Like many other European capitals, Vilnius consists of the Old Town and modern developments. There are 21 districts in the city, but it is hardly possible to see them all. On the tourist map of Vilnius several districts deserve attention:
Old Town, or Senamiestis, is the most visited tourist district in the heart of Vilnius, its cultural, commercial and administrative center. All the main attractions of the city are concentrated here, which is why Senamiestis is considered one of the best places for a tourist to live in Vilnius.
Antakalnis is another old neighborhood of the city. There are many baroque monuments here (e.g. Sluszki Palace or the Church of St. Peter and Paul). Most of the city's universities, the Lithuanian Film Studio and the picturesque old Saulès kapinès cemetery are located here.
Užupis is not even a neighborhood, but a whole state on the map of Vilnius! Yes, a state with its own constitution, ambassadors and honorable citizens. Often Užupis is called the Lithuanian Montmartre - it is home to artists and performers, as well as numerous galleries, workshops and art centers.
Zvėrinas is a quiet, green neighborhood on the right bank of the Neris River, known for its wooden buildings. If you're deciding where to stay in Vilnius, Zverinas (or Zverinets) might be a good option - it's not the suburbs, and it's not an expensive center.
Other interesting areas of the city for tourists are Naujamestis (there are many restaurants and clubs here), Nova Vilnia, Šnipiškės (the business center of Vilnius), Värkai, Žirmūnai and Vilkpede.
There are no overtly dangerous neighborhoods in Vilnius. Don't lose your vigilance in dormitories and suburbs (Paneriai, Sheshkine, Justiniškės, etc.).
