Lithuania does not differ much in terms of crime rate from other Eurozone countries. Vilnius is a calm city where it is generally safe to be in any district.
Nevertheless, the Vilnius police advise staying alert in the city center, especially around Gediminas Avenue and Pilies or Vilniaus streets (where bag snatching can occur).
In the evening, it is not recommended to walk alone near the railway station (beyond it begins the less safe Naujininkai district, where many unemployed and marginalized people live), as well as in the Žirmūnai neighborhood.
And here are a few more tips to avoid unpleasant situations:
In Lithuania, women’s restrooms are marked with the letter “M”, men’s — with “V”;
Alcoholic beverages may only be consumed in designated areas.
