Where is Monte Carlo?
Monte Carlo is an extension of the French Riviera, nestled within the resorts of the Côte d'Azur. It is situated along the shores of the Ligurian Sea within the Principality of Monaco, which is positioned between France and Italy. Monte Carlo is perched in a mountainous region, seemingly nestled among the cliffs. An interesting feature of the city's layout is that access to the beaches is primarily via street elevators, which transport residents and visitors of Monaco's capital between different tiers.
The population of Monte Carlo is slightly over 3,000, and the official currency used is the euro (EUR).
History of Monte Carlo
The history of Monte Carlo doesn't trace back to ancient times or the Middle Ages; instead, it finds its roots in the middle of the 19th century. It all began with the inauguration of what would become the most renowned European casino of its time.
In the 1850s, the princely Grimaldi dynasty, which continues to reign in Monaco today, encountered severe financial hardships. The state's treasury was nearly empty, lacking any profitable ventures. In response, Caroline, the enterprising wife of Prince Florestan, decided to establish a resort in the Principality. The centerpiece and draw for tourists would be a casino.
With the backing of the well-known French businessman François Blanc, Caroline inaugurated a gambling establishment at the base of Mount Charles in 1863. The location was initially unattractive and somewhat neglected. However, when gambling was prohibited in Germany, Monaco's casinos began to attract visitors from all corners of Europe.
Gradually, this remote province transformed into a prestigious resort, significantly boosting the principality's revenue. In 1879, the casino building underwent a lavish reconstruction, mirroring the opulence of the Parisian opera house. The complex now included a hotel, a restaurant, and a concert hall. Since then, Monte Carlo has remained the principal source of prosperity for the Principality, benefiting both the state and the Grimaldi family personally.
