Lublin's main railway station is not just a transport hub, but an excellent organized space that combines convenience, style and care for passengers. After recent renovation, it has become a true symbol of the city, combining historical heritage and modern technology.
History and architecture of the station
Lublin Central Railway Station or Lublin Główny im. Lubelskiego Lipca 1980 is the city's main railroad station of the "Premium" category according to the classification of Polish railroads. The station dates back to the 1870s, when the Nadvyslanska railroad was being built. Nowadays it is an important transportation hub: from here you can leave towards Dorogusk, Przeworsk, Terespol and Warsaw. Regional transportation units, PKP Intercity and PKP Cargo operate in Lublin.
The station building is historic, built in 1877. It was part of the Nadvyslanska railroad, which connected Warsaw with Kovel. Disputes about where exactly to locate the station lasted more than 10 years. At first it was assumed that the station would be built in the northern part of the city. But in 1863, the provincial engineer Felix Bieczynski favored the option in the south - on the lands of Bronowice. It was the southern outskirts that was eventually chosen.
Construction began on August 10, 1875. The architect was Witold Lanci, and construction workers from Kaluga province were employed. Already by 1877 the rails were laid and bridges with crossings were built. The first test trains were running. The official opening of the station took place on August 30, 1877. This was an important event for the city, which accelerated its development.
The train to Warsaw took 7 hours with an average speed of 37 km/h. Three classes of tickets were available. The arrival of the train was warned by three calls. But even then, newspapers complained that the building was small.
In 1893-1894 the station was extended for the first time - the western wing and the paved square in front of the entrance were added. In 1898 a new direction to Brest via Luków was opened. Also the bridge over Bystrzyca was rebuilt - now the trains could go a little faster: about 48 km/h.
Significant modernization took place in 1924-1925, designed by architect Jerzy Müller. The next renovations of the Lublin Railway Station date back to the 1960s and 1980s. Since 1974 the building has been protected as an architectural monument.
In 2004, the station was extensively renovated and received a new east wing. And in 2018, the largest renovation in history began, during which the overpass over Kunitsky Street was renewed and the underpass was lengthened. And at the same time they repaired all platforms and lengthened platform 1. The repair was completed in 2021 after the improvement of the surrounding areas.
In April 2019, the City Council decided to officially rename the station to Lublin Główny, and this name came into effect by December. And from 2023, the station will bear the full name Lublin Główny im. Lubelskiego Lipca 1980 in memory of the "Lublin July" strikes.
Infrastructure of the Lublin railway station
The station building and platforms are located on the eastern part of the station, next to the square. The modern building of the Lublin Railway Station at Dvortsova includes:

- A three-storey building with a usable area of 18,000 m²;
- Underground parking lot;
- Waiting and rest areas;
- Escalators, elevators and barrier-free access for passengers with low mobility;

Platform 1 next to the station serves long-distance trains, mainly towards Warsaw. It is divided into parts 1a and 1b. Trains from platform 1a go to Dęblin and Warsaw, while trains from 1b go to the airport, Chelm, Lubartów, Parczew and Zamość.
Platform 2 serves mainly long-distance trains to the east. The shortened platform 3 is used for regional and short trains, while platform 4 was temporary.
The station has a locomotive depot with an operating turntable and many tracks for train parking. The station is controlled from three signal posts, and to the east is a modern LCS Control Center responsible for several other stations. Two old water taps stand on the site - they used to be used by steam locomotives, but have not been used since 1988.
