Warsaw is the largest city and the capital of the Republic of Poland. The city is located in the eastern part of the country, in the Mazovian Lowland. As of 2012, the population of Warsaw was over 1.8 million people. The national currency of Poland is the Polish złoty.
The first documented mentions of Warsaw date back to the 14th century. There are several versions explaining the origin of the city's name. According to one of the most romantic versions, long ago, a local fisherman named Wars fell in love with a mermaid named Sawa—and the combination of these two names gave the city its name. It is worth noting that the mermaid is depicted in the coat of arms of Warsaw.
