Transportation in Slovenia

Public transportation in Slovenia: its peculiarities and ticket prices.

The most popular public transportation in Slovenia is represented by cars and trains. The railroad connects Ljubljana with Kranj (northwest direction), Kozina (to the sea coast), with Zagreb in Croatia. Slovenia has a fairly developed railroad network. The center of the network is the capital Ljubljana. Regular trains run from Ljubljana to most parts of the country.

The best Slovenian train is the InterCity Slovenia Express (ICS), which runs five times a day between the country's largest cities Maribor and Ljubljana. One trip per day runs from Maribor to Ljubljana to Koper. Fare from Maribor to Ljubljana (1 hour 45 minutes): 12 EUR in second class, 19 EUR in first class. Reserving a seat in ICS is obligatory and free of charge.

On weekends there is a special offer: 30% discount on a round-trip ticket. When traveling around the country you can use the Euro-Domino system, where unlimited trips for 3 days will cost 47 EUR, and each additional day - 7-10 EUR. However, buying such a ticket can be justified only if you intend to use trains daily and more than once. Tickets are sold at railway ticket offices and tourist offices, and on trains, where they are more expensive.

There are two perpendicular highways in the country. The first is the "Slovenika", and it runs from the border with Austria and Hungary in the northeast to the border with Italy in the southwest. The second is "Illyrica", running from the border with Austria in the northwest to the border with Croatia in the southeast. The network of secondary roads is fairly well developed, but many of them often lack road signs.

The bus is the cheapest and most convenient form of transportation. The ticket is paid for with a token for one trip. They are sold at newspaper and tobacco stands. You can pay cash at the ticket office or to the checker at the entrance, or you can pay with a pass for an unlimited number of trips during one day or week. Buy them at the red-colored kiosks. Buses of the main routes operate from 03:00 to 00:00, the rest - from 5:00 to 22:30. Buses in Slovenia run very frequently. Travel from Ljubljana to Maribor (about 3 hours) costs about 11 EUR. For the end of the week it is better to book tickets in advance. Only by bus you can get to Bled, Bohinj, Istria.

On the bus timetable it may say:

vozi vsak dan - daily

vozi ob delavnikih - on weekdays

vozi ob sobotah - on Saturdays

vozi ob nedeljah in praznikih - on Sundays and public holidays

The country's major airports are Ljubljana, Maribor and Portoroz. However, there are no domestic airlines in the small country. But there is hitchhiking, and it is quite well developed.

A cab to the international airport in Ljubljana costs about 10 EUR. From the airport there is a bus number 28 to the bus station. The fare is 1.5 EUR. Buses run every hour from 05:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and every two hours from 06:00 to 19:00 on weekends. Tickets are sold by the driver.
