Barcelona: national cuisine

Getting to know the local cuisine is always a kind of ritual. What is the first thing to try in Barcelona?

The local cuisine is very varied and will appeal to even the most discerning eaters.

In restaurants in Barcelona, paella is a popular dish made from rice, olive oil, spices and meat, seafood or vegetables. Equally popular is tortilla, a thick potato omelet with meat, fish and mushrooms.

The first courses here are worth trying a variety of soups. For example, semolina cream soup with almonds, clam soup, fish bouillabaisse or gazpacho. This cold soup is prepared in different ways, but the main ingredients are broth, stewed liver, ham, pieces of meat or fish, seafood, pureed tomatoes, cucumbers, olive oil and spices. It is served with charcoal-baked flatbread.

In Barcelona, meat dishes are loved and perfectly cooked. Usually beef, pork or poultry is stewed or grilled. Be sure to try puchero. This dish is made of ham, chickpeas and garlic chorizo sausage and served with dumplings of bacon and garlic sprinkled with parsley greens. And, of course, don't forget to try the cured Serrano ham and the legendary jamon.

As a side dish you will be offered potatoes or rice with all sorts of additions, including the signature Catalan black rice flavored with cuttlefish ink.

Of course, local restaurants also offer seafood dishes. For example, navajas - an originally prepared type of mollusks shaped like knives, mejillones - pan baked mussels, which are washed with clean water for a day before cooking.

The most famous dessert in Spain is caramel pudding and pies filled with almond cream.

And you can drink all this deliciousness with a glass of Catalan wine.
