New York City's past and present

The city is located in southeastern New York State, where the Hudson River flows into the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

The "lower" bay of the city is considered to be Lower New York Bay, the "upper" bay is Upper New York Bay. Above it is the narrow island of Manhattan (length - 20 km, width - 4 km, area - 60 square kilometers).

New York is an "island" city. In addition to Manhattan, it includes Staten Island, the western part of Long Island, part of the North American mainland (Bronx borough) and several islets in New York Harbor.

In addition, New York City is located near two geologic faults, which has affected its topography.

For centuries Indians lived on the territory of modern New York, but it was founded at the end of the XVI century by the Dutch, so it was called "New Amsterdam" until 1664.

From 1785 to 1790 New York was the capital of the USA. At that time the famous New York Stock Exchange was founded.

Throughout its history, the city has experienced many crises and disasters, but each time, like the Phoenix bird, it was reborn from the ashes. It was reborn to become one of the most powerful cities in the world.

Today, New York City has a population of over 8 million people. And more than 9 million tourists come here every year. What makes it so attractive?
