Traditional dishes of New York City

An introduction to the diverse cuisine of New York City.

What to Try in New York

New York’s cuisine is an incredible fusion of flavors and traditions from around the world. In every neighborhood, you can find dishes representing different cultures.

In Little Italy, try authentic Italian pizza; in Chinatown — duck soup and chicken with teriyaki sauce; and in Harlem and the Bronx — Caribbean specialties. If you’re craving something more familiar, head to the European restaurants of Brighton Beach.

In addition, be sure to try:

  • local hot dogs. You can buy them almost everywhere — a hearty and inexpensive snack;

  • bagels. They are made from yeast dough shaped into a ring, boiled, and then baked. Various toppings are added — for example, chocolate chips or sesame seeds. Bagels with cream cheese or slices of salmon are especially popular. The most famous ones are made by H&H Bagels;

  • the Egg Creams cocktail. Despite its name, it contains neither eggs nor cream. It’s made from milk, seltzer water, and chocolate syrup;

  • the famous cheesecake. This New York symbol is made from cream cheese, vanilla, cream, and biscuits — and you can try it at almost any local café.
