The main forms of public transportation in New York City are the subway and buses.

Subway. The New York City subway system consists of 29 lines and 468 stations. The first train was launched in the mid-19th century. Today, all cars are air-conditioned.

Features of the New York Subway:

  • Trains operate not by lines but by routes, which may change on weekends.

  • There are several types of trains: Express — stop only at a few stations, Uptown — travel only to Upper Manhattan, Downtown — only to Lower Manhattan, and charters. More details can be found here.

  • To avoid buying a ticket before every trip, you can use a MetroCard (available at vending machines). The price of an unlimited weekly card is 34 USD. More information about the card.

Buses. Payment on buses is made through machines located next to the driver, and only coins are accepted. Buses stop only on request — you need to press the “stop request” button. In some buses, you can also pay with a MetroCard.

Taxis. Fare: base fare — 3 USD, 1 mile — 3.50 USD. Waiting time and tips — 15% of the fare — are charged separately.
