Public transportation in New York: tips for tourists

In contrast to other cities, you can meet successful businessmen and celebrities in public transportation in New York. And all because the prices for parking in the city are fabulous - from 20 USD per hour. By comparison, a subway ticket, regardless of distance, costs only 2.75 USD.

The main forms of public transportation in New York City are the subway and buses.

Subway. The New York City subway system consists of 29 lines and 468 stations. The first train was launched in the mid-19th century. Today, all cars are air-conditioned.

Subway features in New York City:

• trains run not on lines, but on routes that change on weekends;
• there are several types of trains: Express - stopping only at a few stations, Uptown - going only to Upper Manhattan, Downtown - only to Lower Manhattan, and "charters". You can read more about them here;

Buses. Payment on buses is made through machines near the driver, and only with coins. Buses stop only on request - you need to press the "stop request" button. On some buses, you can pay with a MetroCard.

Taxi. Price: boarding - 2.5 USD, 1 mile - 2 USD. Idle time and tips are charged separately - 15% of the fare.
