Safety in Philadelphia

Safety in Philadelphia is not uniform across the city. Traditionally, its central part is the calmest, while its main problem is the northern suburbs, which are the dangerous areas of Philadelphia.

It was once home to European settlers, but after they gradually moved out to upscale suburban neighborhoods, their place was taken by residents of depressed areas.

Today, about half of the residents of North Philadelphia are black, another 30% are Hispanic, mostly Mexicans. Consequently, crime rates here are off the charts. For the most part, they are related to drugs. But tourists are not advised to even just walk around this neighborhood - sooner or later they will be accosted by locals with questions and "raids".
