Basic information about Golden Sands

Imagine one of the longest and widest beach strips in Bulgaria (over 100 meters wide and 4 km long), surrounded on one side by a string of diverse, densely built hotels, and on the other by lush greenery and mountainous landscapes. This is the wonderful place of Golden Sands.

It is worth mentioning that the resort is located only 18 km north of the famous Varna, where the life is in a completely different urban pace and where you can always go if you get bored with the languid resort life.

The currency of the resort is Bulgarian lev (BGN).

In relative proximity to the town is the port of Balchik. The road to all the amenities of civilization, as well as excursions and shopping, takes about half an hour for sunbathing resort-goers. The same amount of time back - to the world of spa procedures, gentle waves and sunbathing. It is noteworthy that the territory of the popular resort is still considered part of the protected national park with the same name.

Although the construction of the resort in its present form began only in 1957, still there is every reason to say that the Golden Sands resort was founded much earlier.

For example, there is a legend that the first to see the shining fine-grained sand and the endless coastline were the Argonauts, who went in search of the fleece. The companions of Jason visited these places and left their descendants messages about the wondrous dwarfs inhabiting the territory, which have not yet been properly deciphered.

The Byzantines were more daring, who in the fifth century began to explore these lands, and as early as the thirteenth century they built a monastery.

After falling under the rule of the Ottomans, the territory received its first known name - Uzunkum (translated as "Long Sands").

There is a separate legend about how the Long Sands turned into golden sands. According to legend, it was here, in times immemorial, a gang of pirates, whose ship wrecked on the shores of the Black Sea, decided to hide a huge treasure of looted gold. Then fate came into play, determined to avenge the outlaws for all their misdeeds in life. The local magic land turned the buried treasure into golden sand, scattered in an even shimmering layer all over the coast.

Already in the early sixties of the last century to assess whether the local sea is really transparent, fresh and clean air, and the sands are made of gold, could first vacationers resort.

It should be noted that Golden Sands quickly gained popularity among the Soviet holidaymakers. The fame of these places to this day - for a number of reasons the city remains one of the most popular resorts in the country. During the high season the local resorts, spas and, of course, the beaches are densely packed with holidaymakers.
