Climate in Protaras

Learn all about the climatic conditions of Protaras and the flora and fauna of this resort.

The main feature of Protaras' Mediterranean climate is its comfortable weather all year round. The off-season is very short, with spring starting as early as February and summer lasting until November. The daylight hours range from 10 hours in December to 15 hours in June.

The maximum temperature in Protaras occurs in July and August (the thermometer can rise to +40°C), while the minimum temperature is in January, dropping to +10°C. Due to its coastal location, sea breezes help alleviate the heat. If you plan to visit Protaras in spring, such as March-April, it's advisable to bring sweaters and windbreakers, as evenings can be chilly.

Thanks to its favorable location and climate, Protaras boasts unique natural beauty, including countless bays and lagoons with clear blue water that delights tourists. Tides in Protaras are almost imperceptible, typical of the entire Mediterranean Sea, with water levels fluctuating between 30-40 centimeters, shallower in the morning and slightly deeper in the evening.

Protaras Vegetation and Fauna

Cyprus exhibits diverse plant life, with forests covering 20% of the island. East of Cape Greco, near Protaras, you'll find the Kavo Greco National Forest Park, created to preserve the unique nature of the region. Within an area of nearly 380 hectares, you'll encounter more than 400 species of fascinating plants, including 28 endemics. The park features rich collections of crocuses, daffodils, and irises. During the flowering season, the diverse plant life paints the landscape with a riot of colors and fills the air with aromatic scents.

While the plant world is diverse, the animal world on Cyprus is less so. However, many species of birds spend their winters here. Cyprus is home to over 300 species of resident and migratory birds, including storks, herons, wild ducks, orioles, honeycreepers, nightingales, clovers, warblers, pintails, wrens, and swallows.

Among reptiles, which are common on the island, you'll find lizards like skinks, agamas, and slender snakehead. There are also tree frogs, geckos, and chameleons.

Regarding wild animals, Cyprus hosts wolves, donkeys, squirrels, martens, Cypriot mountain sheep mouflon, weasels, two species of turtles - green and caretta-caretta (these rare turtles lay eggs on the island, and their nesting sites are protected at the state level), hares, and foxes.

There are eight species of snakes, but only one of them, the Levantine viper, is venomous. The island's insect world is rich, with beautiful butterflies like the red-booked Apollo, scorpions, spiders, colorful beetles, and more.
