Safety in Protaras
Practice shows that Protaras is completely safe. Even pickpockets on the streets are rare, and everyone here is relaxed and enjoying life. Cypriots are good-natured, sociable, and good at getting in touch with tourists. The only danger you may encounter is an overactive sun, and even swarthy people need to wear high SPF creams at first.
Although, unfortunately, petty crime (mostly theft) on the beach and in other tourist areas is no longer uncommon. Keep an eye on your luggage and personal belongings and never leave any valuables in your car to avoid tempting fate.
There are still some risks involved in visiting the occupied northern territories. The Cyprus Tourism Organization (CTO) has warned all companies organizing trips to the north of the island that they can do so entirely at their own risk. However, if you do decide to travel to the north, remember:
- Don't postpone your trip to the last day so that you have time for any unforeseen delays.
- Make sure you have with you all the documents you need to cross the Green Line. These are: a residence permit issued by the Republic of Cyprus or valid travel documents and, if necessary, a visa to enter the Republic of Cyprus.
- Do not break any driving rules or any rules and regulations at all.
As is the case all over the world, bank card data theft has been reported in Cyprus.
