Sataplia is a Georgian nature reserve that includes karst caves and other interesting spots for tourists. In addition, the reserve offers the opportunity for children to see dinosaur figures and footprints.
At the entrance of the reserve, there is a parking lot that can accommodate more than 50 cars. The ticket booths are sheltered from rain and bright sun, and there are benches nearby where you can sit. Tourist groups start their tours every hour from the opening time.
You can exit Sataplia from the same point where you entered. The likelihood of anyone getting lost or separated is minimal.
A Bit of History
In 1934, a local resident named Petre Chabukiani, who was passionate about the local history, discovered this unusual place. Five years later, a natural reserve was established on this territory.
Only in 2010, a large-scale reconstruction and modernization of the Sataplia reserve took place. A separate pavilion was constructed to preserve the dinosaur footprints.
Currently, there is a memorial dedicated to Chabukiani located within the Sataplia territory.
Main Attractions
The Sataplia Nature Reserve is located near the Prometheus Caves, a favorite destination for tourists. Each cave has its own unique features and attractions. Please note that no tours are conducted on Mondays.
Dinosaur Footprints
Sataplia is unique because it is home to dinosaur footprints, both carnivorous and herbivorous. Very few countries can boast such attractions.
Scientists believe that these footprints date back to around 150 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. They are arranged in two spheres, adding to the mystery of the place. Scientists have yet to fully explain the origin of these footprints.
Jurassic Park
At the exit of the pavilion, there is a lush green forest with trees reaching a height of about 400 meters. The air in this area is thick and humid. The stone paths and wooden fences enhance the primal atmosphere.
In the heart of the forest, there are models of dinosaurs. Children are particularly fascinated by them, as the dinosaurs appear lifelike and bring joy and excitement.
Bee Cliff
The Jurassic Park ends and a path begins, which is located above a cliff. This area was once inhabited by a large number of bees, which is why locals named the mountain "Honey Mountain." From this spot, tourists can enjoy an incredible view of the Gelati Monastery and the city.
Cave
Following the trail, tourists enter the Sataplia Cave. The entrance to the cave is designed in the form of an airlock, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of primordiality without disturbing the delicate microclimate inside the cave.
Inside the cave, there are five chambers. Tourists can only explore one of them, but even these 309 meters are sufficient for an interesting excursion.
The cave comprises several distinct sections: the Chamber of Burning Stones, the Transparent Chamber, and the Chamber of the Stone Heart. The Ogkhaskuri River flows along the cave floor.
The cave is home to fish, worms, and mollusks. Some visitors may also spot bats. The highlight of the cave is a large stone heart, believed by tourists to grant wishes if touched.
After visiting the cave, visitors to the reserve feel like true explorers.
Viewing Platform
The most memorable feature of Sataplia is the glass-bottomed viewing platform. It is easy to find—just follow the signs and ascend the trail.
The crystal-clear floor of the viewing platform creates a feeling of weightlessness over the abyss. At a height of over 700 meters, visitors can enjoy an incredible view of the city of Kutaisi.
Important! Before entering the platform, all visitors must wear special shoe covers to avoid scratching the glass. The glass platform is not operational during rainy or snowy weather.
Colchis Forest
Sataplia features a trekking trail called the Colchis Forest. It is home to numerous endemic species and a museum showcasing a dinosaur skeleton made of plastic. Within the forest, there is also a workshop where traces of various dinosaurs are created for young visitors.
How to Get to Sataplia
You can reach the Sataplia Reserve from any Georgian resort:
If you're traveling from Tbilisi, it takes about 3 hours by car to reach Sataplia. The distance is approximately 250 kilometers.
If you're coming from Kutaisi, it's only a 20-minute drive. The distance is 10 kilometers, which can even be walked.
Many tourists travel from Batumi to Sataplia, covering a distance of 150 kilometers in about 3 hours. However, the road is more challenging than from Tbilisi.
Best Transportation Options to the Reserve
Once you've chosen your route, you need to decide how to get to the reserve.
By Car
Tourists who choose to travel by car will have the opportunity to visit not only the Sataplia Reserve but also the Prometheus Cave and the Martvili Canyons. The roads are in good condition, and nothing spoils the trip.
Guided Tour
The duration of the tour is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours.

Important: Be sure to bring water and warm clothing with you. The temperature inside the cave is around +14 °C.
A trip to the Sataplia Reserve is not suitable for everyone. On one hand, you can have a great time with children in the fresh air. On the other hand, walking through the caves can be tiring, and visitors often look for a bench to take a break.
