Historical Background

The idea of creating a funicular in Tbilisi originated in 1905, and the Belgians helped to implement it. In fact, with their money the funicular was created, and in return the Georgians promised to give it to Belgian authorities for 45 years. But then the USSR came along, everything changed, and the promise was forgotten.

The funicular continued to operate until 2000, when it had an accident - its cable broke. Fortunately there were no fatalities. After the incident, the attraction was closed for a full thirteen years. Only in 2013, after a major overhaul, it began its work again to the delight of local residents and visitors.
